4/16/67: Sen. Harrelson's "Veto"
CHICAGO TRIBUNE HEADLINE: PETERS NO-HIT BID VETOED BY SEN. HARRELSON 9,189 fans witnessed a no-hitter for 7 innings in the nightcap of the White Sox double-header with the Washington Senators. What they witnessed in the top of the 8th was a veto, a veto delivered by the distinguished Senator from South Carolina, Mr. Ken Harrelson. Peters breezed through the first 7 innings of the nightcap, overpowering the Senators limp bats, who had just 3 hits in the first game, a 1-0 Sox triumph behind Joe Horlen. Then in the 8th, Harrelson took a Peters fastball and whizzed it past a leaping Pete Ward in left to veto Peters' no-no bid. Harrelson's double would end up being the only hit off Peters, who struck out 10 of Harrelson's fellow constituents, including Frank Howard to end the nightcap, a 1-0 Sox win.
