Re: Fireworks at Fenway

There was a combined grand total of 23 runs and 34 hits in the Sox slugfest at Fenway, which as the following ballpark effects show should have favored the sluggers: Singles favored both lefthanders and righthanders at 1-19, with homeruns favoring the lefts at 1-18 and the rights at 1-19.  I didn't even keep track of the total ballpark singles, but I know 29 of the combined 34 hits were singles, maybe a 1/3rd of the singles was off the ballpark chart, but here's a grand total of the homerun effects that were in play in the entire game: 1. The recipient of that homerun was... Jerry Adair of the White Sox. Now to Boston's hit total, of their 18 hits a grand total of 17 were singles. Yes, 17. The only EBH was a triple by Tony C. The closest thing to homers for the Sawx were the sac flies, of which there were 4. There were a couple of card misreads, which were corrected, especially one where I gave Jim Lonborg a steal attempt, of which he is ruled a "D" in SADV, which...

OK, 1967 it is

I own 4 S-O-M seasons, 1961/65/67/73. I'm still somewhat of a novice when it comes to this game, still "stumbling in" on a rule I'm a little fuzzy on. (OK, the song "Stumbling In" was playing on Spotify, had to throw that in) A few days after venturing into the 65 season I decided, maybe I better try 1967 again with the ADV/SADV hybrid. How long will this last before I get restless again? Fingers crossed, I opened in Cincinnati, Maloney v. Miller. 4/12/65: There was a near-cycle on Opening Day

Was it by Willie Mays? Roberto Clemente? Mickey Mantle? No, no and no. The near cycle was almost pulled off by none other than... The Mets. Casey's club got a lead-off triple by Billy Cowan, a 2nd inning homer by Charley Smith, a homer by Ed Kranepool in the 7th, and a pinch-hit double by Jesse Gonder in the 8th. No trace of a single in an otherwise "Mets" performance by the Mets, who fell to Don Drysdale and the Dodgers, 7-2. Meanwhile in DC... The Sawx and Senators fought to a 2-2 tie through 8 innings until the Bostonians broke it open, sending 10, scoring 5 with the big hit a 3-run homer by Bob Tillman off Nick Willhite powering the Sawx to the win, which mirrored the actual 7-2 score on Opening day, but with one difference, Dick Radatz got the win instead of Bill Monbouquette, who fell victim to the "dot" in the 8th, forcing the 2-2 tie. Frank Howard, incidentally, went 0-for-4 in his DC debut.

60 Years Later: Drawbosky was the winning pitcher of record...

But Kansas City couldn't hold the lead, as the Tigers scored twice in the 6th off Jim Dickson and cashed in big-time on late insurance policies to defeat the A's, 10-5. Mickey Lolich, save for a disastrous 5th inning, pitched 8+ solid innings to get the win over Dickson, despite card-only starter Moe Drabowsky being in line for the win after 5. The A's did make a game of it in the 9th, chasing Lolich after a 1st and 3rd start to the inning, getting a run off of Larry Sherry and loading the bases with 2 outs before some "Put it on the board" guy missed a grand slam on the home run check. 60 years later: You mean it wasn't Dick Allen who hit the first regular season HR at the Dome?

It was of course, Dick Allen, though Mickey Mantle hit the first Astrodome home run in a pre-season game. Even with the "1" home run effect, someone else did roll the "1" that lit up the animated   scoreboard. It was... John Bateman!  Allen, however, did go 3-for-4, while Tony Gonzalez drove in all 3 Philly runs with a 2-run single and sac fly in what turned out to be an 3-2 Phils win at the Dome despite a late Astro rally which was scuttled on a late around-the-horner by Allen. But John Bateman, what might have been... (I liked Justine better) (No relation)
