NL 5/7: Did Don Sutton really give up 5 homers against Pittsburgh?

Yes, he did indeed do so, but those S-O-M dice have a mind of their own: Los Angeles 3-8-1 Pittsburgh 0-6-0 WP-Sutton LP-Walker The difference? 2 late DP's and a late home run from Sut's batterymate, Steve Yeager. Incidentally, Willie Stargell has had some trouble "popping off" in the power dept. Anybody hear from that Seaver fellow lately?  New York 1-8-0 Atlanta 0-2-0 WP-Seaver LP-Dobson The "Terrific" one, 8 k's and a late RBI single from Rusty Staub. For good measure, Seaver struck out some guy named Aaron to end the game. Houston 6-7-2 Montreal 2-6-2 WP-Roberts LP-McAnally Astros did all their scoring in the 1st, May, Edwards a pair of 2-run singles. Cincinnati 1-4-0 Philadelphia 0-5-0 WP-Grimsley LP-Twitchell Bobby Tolan RBI single in 1st.  San Diego 3-6-1 Chicago 1-4-2 WP-Greif LP-Reuschel Dave Hilton solo homer.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Mr. Harry Caray

"We go to the bottom of the 13th, it'll be Allen, Melton and Henderson to face Bob Bolin in this tie ballgame. Allen is 1 for 5 with a double and 3 RBI. The wind and the pitch to Allen, ground ball to Aparicio, throws to 1st, one out. Allen grounds to short, here now is Bill Melton, 1 for 5 with an RBI single. We are approaching 11:30 here at Comiskey, somebody's gotta win it. The wind and the pitch to Melton, here it comes... There's a drive hit deep to right, Evans is on the run, it might be out of here, it could be... SOX WIN! SOX WIN! SOX WIN! HOLY COW, WHAT A BALL GAME!" (Nancy Faust plays "Bill Bailey" in celebration) Chicago 6-10-0 Boston 5-15-1 (13 innings) WP-Acosta LP-Bolin (Original starters, John Curtis and Stan Bahnsen) Reggie Smith, 2-run homer for Boston. Speaking of starters, a closer started and won in B'more: Oakland 7-9-1 Baltimore 3-6-0 WP-Fingers LP-Alexander SV-Pena Gene Tenace, 2 homers/5 RBI. Some guy named Jackson hit a sol...

A day of protest...

On the actual May 6 schedule, the Giants beat the Cubs in a wild G1 of a DH, 11-9 in 11 innings. The game ended up being played under protest because of a crazy bottom of the 4th, where a coach got waylaid in a wild brawl. Thanks to some sloppy bookkeeping, G1 of the Cubs-Giants ended up "under protest" as I gave the Cubs 2 extra AB's after a inning-ending DP in the top of the 8th. Those extra AB's allowed the Giants to tie with 2 runs in the 9th and a walk-off 2-run  homer by Tito Fuentes in the bottom of 12th. Here's the DH summary and the rest of the 5/6/ sked: Game 1: San Francisco 7-12-1 Chicago 5-14-1 WP-Sosa LP-LaRoche Fuentes walk-off HR in 12th. Game 2: San Francisco 6-9-1 Chicago 3-11-1 WP-Willoughby LP-Gura Dave Kingman 2 homers, 3 RBI Fuentes also homers. Houston 9-14-1 New York 1-5-1 WP-Reuss LP Parker Cedeno 3-4, 5 RBI, 2 stolen bases. Atlanta 11-15-1 Philadelphia 9-15-1 WP-Gentry LP-Christenson SV-Niekro Dusty Baker, 2 doubles, triple, 3 RBI. Montre...

What really happened in Cleveland...

5/6/73 double-header Game 1-The A's took a 1-0 lead on a single by Dick Green, double by Reggie Jackson and back-to-back walks by Deron Johnson and Sal Bando, Green scoring. Then in the bottom of the 1st. the Tribe started teeing off on starter Ken Holtzman one solo homer at a time: Bottom of the 1st, George Hendrick. Bottom of the 5th, Rusty Torres. Bottom of the 6th, Charlie Spikes. 3-1 Indians after 6.  Dick Tidrow kept the A's off the scoreboard from the 1st inning on. Then in the 8th, he sprung a leak. Gene Tenace and Ray Fosse went back-to-back, tying the score and chasing Tidrow from the game. Tom Hilgendorf took over and could only watch as the A's completed the comeback in the 9th with a one-out double by Joe Rudi, an intentional walk to Reggie Jackson and a go-ahead single by Deron Johnson scoring Rudi. The A's added  insurance with an RBI single by Sal Bando and sac fly by Ray Fosse. Holtzman pitched a perfect bottom of the 9th to secure the G1 comeback. No...
