4/25/61: The Miller Lite Player of the Game is...

Have a night, Marv Throneberry! The future Miller Lite pitchman and New York Met slugged 3 home runs as Kansas City handed the Twins their 2nd loss of the season by a score of 8-7. Marvelous Marv homered in his first three at-bats all off of Twins starter Ted Sadowski, hitting the 6/8 split off Sadowski's card turning up homers each time. Throneberry drove in 4 runs.  Throneberry would fly to center and draw a walk his other 2 times up. When asked about his night after the game, the A's first baseman said, "I don't know why they asked me to do this commercial." Future star in the making, folks. P.S: The actual score of this game was... A's 20, Twins 2.  P.P.S: There were also no home runs in that game either.

4/23/61: Then there were none

New beats old as Senator's hand Twins first loss The expansion Washington Senators handed their predecessors their first loss of the season as the New Sens beat the old ones, now known as the Minnesota Twins, 4-0 in Bloomington. The Sens jumped on top with 2 in the 1st off Lefty Jack Kralick, getting one-out singles from Danny O'Connell and Gene Woodling, with a subsequent single from RC Stevens and a sac fly from Harry Bright scoring the 2 runs.  The Sens then turned a lead-off double from Bright into a 3rd run in the 4th when Coot Veal bunted Bright to 3rd with one out, setting up another sac fly this time from Pete Daley stretching the lead to 3-0 after 3-1/2. Right-hander Dick Donovan shut down the previously unbeaten Twins on a 5-hitter and with a hit of his own in the 7th, leading off the inning with a homer off Kralick. It was Donovan's 2nd homer of the season, the most by a pitcher thus far this season.   As the final out was recorded, the Metropolitan Stadium crowd...

Some 4/22/61 highlights...

Twins remain undefeated at 8-0 after toppling the Senators 11-4 behind Pedro Ramos and a 6-run outburst in the 5th and 4 more in the 6th. The Yankees took the 1st game of a day-night DH from the Orioles behind the power of the "M & M Boys" in the matinee, 4-3. Mantle and Maris were a combined 4-7, accounting for 2 runs scored each and a 2-run homer by Maris. The nightcap however, despite the box score you are about to see, did not involve the "Boys." BAL 15-18-1 NYY 14-19-2 (10 INNINGS) The Yanks batted around and then some in the 1st, sending 15 batters against starter Hal Brown and reliever Milt Pappas. Brown recorded only 1 out and served up a grand slam to Moose Skowron. Brown surrendered 9 runs in that horrid 1/3 of an inning. Pappas fared a little better, allowing 4 runs before being relieved in the 7th. The Yanks led 11-0 after 2-1/2 behind Jim Coates. Starting in the bottom of the 3rd, the Orioles began unraveling Coates. The Birds pecked away with a run...

4/21/61: Cubs nearly "walk" one off

The 61 Cubbies enjoyed a big performance from Frank "Not that one" Thomas in a 6-4 win over the Phillies, which wasn't without a "Phreaky"   Phinish. Thomas homered leading off the 2nd, doubled and scored in the 4th on an Andre Rodgers 2-run single, homered with 1 out in the 5th and tripled leading off the 8th. Thanks to Cub starter Don Cardwell, Thomas's night nearly ended in a "walk"-off. In the bottom of the 9th, Cardwell walked Clay Dalrymple and Ruben Amaro, putting him at the fatigue level. He did get PH Ken Walters to fly to left, but after 2 more walks to Bobby Malkmus and Tony Taylor, a 6-1 lead entering the inning became a very scary 6-2, prompting the "College" to "flunk out" Cardwell and put in Barney Schultz.  Schultz then walked Johnny Callison, forcing home another run, then PH Bobby Del Greco flied to a streaking Billy Williams at the wall in right, scoring Malkmus and moving Callison to 2nd and Taylor to 3rd wit...

4/21/61:"Greetings Everybody, this is Mel Allen"

"This is Quality Modern Radio, 1460 WOKO, Albany, New York." Yankees-Orioles 4/21/61 Top of the 3rd:  Mel Allen: "2 outs, here's Bobby Richardson. Richardson grounded to short to open the ballgame. Barber throws from the wind, here's the pitch. He swings, there's a fly hit to left, Williams at the track, it is going, going, it is gone! Bobby Richardson fires the first salvo, a home run that just clears the left field wall, it's 1-0 Yankees here in the 3rd. Now here's Tony Kubek, who grounded to 2nd in the 1st. The left-handed throwing Barber kicks and fires and there's a drive hit to left field, if it stays fair, it is gone and it is! HOW ABOUT THAT! Richardson and Kubek, the keystone combo have gone back-to-back here in the 3rd for a 2-0 Yankee lead. Kubek's home run just cleared that left field foul pole"  Top of the 4th: "Ask for the crisp refresher, Ballantine Beer!" We head to the top half of the 4th inning, Yankees lead 2-...
