Yankees-Orioles 4/21/61 Top of the 3rd:
Mel Allen: "2 outs, here's Bobby Richardson. Richardson grounded to short to open the ballgame. Barber throws from the wind, here's the pitch. He swings, there's a fly hit to left, Williams at the track, it is going, going, it is gone! Bobby Richardson fires the first salvo, a home run that just clears the left field wall, it's 1-0 Yankees here in the 3rd. Now here's Tony Kubek, who grounded to 2nd in the 1st. The left-handed throwing Barber kicks and fires and there's a drive hit to left field, if it stays fair, it is gone and it is! HOW ABOUT THAT! Richardson and Kubek, the keystone combo have gone back-to-back here in the 3rd for a 2-0 Yankee lead. Kubek's home run just cleared that left field foul pole"
Top of the 4th: "Ask for the crisp refresher, Ballantine Beer!" We head to the top half of the 4th inning, Yankees lead 2-0, Elston Howard will lead off, followed by Maris and Boyer. Howard grounded to Robinson in the 2nd. Barber from the wind, the pitch, there's a drive hit to left, Williams at the track, wall, it is going, going, gone! Elston Howard leads off the 4th with a blast that just clears the wall in left, the 3rd Yankee homer of the game, accounting for all 3 runs. HOW ABOUT THAT!"
Bottom of the 6th: "Atlantic keeps your car on the go! They're through 4 innings at Comiskey Park, White Sox and Red Sox are scoreless, McLish vs. Monbouquette. The upstart Angels beat Detroit 5-2, the unbeaten Twins win their home opener over the New Senators, 2-0 and Kansas City hung on to beat Cleveland 4-3, first win for the Athletics. Here's Jackie Brandt, he's singled twice and stole a base. Yankees lead behind Whitey Ford 3-0. Ford from the wind, the pitch to Brandt, base hit to center field. Brandt is now 3 for 3, all singles. Here is Dick Williams, who has struck out and grounded into a double play. Ford fires, here's the pitch, fly ball to right field, Maris having a little trouble, the ball falls out of his glove and rolls to the wall. Brandt's speeding around, he will score the first Oriole run, Williams will end up at 3rd on what will likely be a 3-base error by Roger Maris. (Brooks Robinson then grounded to 3rd) Here now is Jim Gentile, who has struck out twice. 1 out, Williams at 3rd. Ford from the stretch, he fires, there's a drive hit deep to right field, Maris is at the track, the wall, it is going, going, it is gone! Tie ballgame on the Gentile homer, it is 3 to 3."
Bottom of the 8th, Gentile struck again off Ford, then in the 9th, Steve Barber despite a pair of 2-out walks, got Bobby Richardson on a force to short.
BAL 4-8-2 NYY 3-5-1 WP-Barber LP-Ford Jim Gentile, 2 home runs, 3 RBI.
