New beats old as Senator's hand Twins first loss
The expansion Washington Senators handed their predecessors their first loss of the season as the New Sens beat the old ones, now known as the Minnesota Twins, 4-0 in Bloomington.
The Sens jumped on top with 2 in the 1st off Lefty Jack Kralick, getting one-out singles from Danny O'Connell and Gene Woodling, with a subsequent single from RC Stevens and a sac fly from Harry Bright scoring the 2 runs.
The Sens then turned a lead-off double from Bright into a 3rd run in the 4th when Coot Veal bunted Bright to 3rd with one out, setting up another sac fly this time from Pete Daley stretching the lead to 3-0 after 3-1/2.
Right-hander Dick Donovan shut down the previously unbeaten Twins on a 5-hitter and with a hit of his own in the 7th, leading off the inning with a homer off Kralick. It was Donovan's 2nd homer of the season, the most by a pitcher thus far this season.
As the final out was recorded, the Metropolitan Stadium crowd gave the Twins a warm standing ovation as they exited the field. The Twins are an AL-leading 8-1.
