What really happened in Cleveland...

5/6/73 double-header Game 1-The A's took a 1-0 lead on a single by Dick Green, double by Reggie Jackson and back-to-back walks by Deron Johnson and Sal Bando, Green scoring. Then in the bottom of the 1st. the Tribe started teeing off on starter Ken Holtzman one solo homer at a time:

Bottom of the 1st, George Hendrick. Bottom of the 5th, Rusty Torres. Bottom of the 6th, Charlie Spikes. 3-1 Indians after 6.

Dick Tidrow kept the A's off the scoreboard from the 1st inning on. Then in the 8th, he sprung a leak. Gene Tenace and Ray Fosse went back-to-back, tying the score and chasing Tidrow from the game. Tom Hilgendorf took over and could only watch as the A's completed the comeback in the 9th with a one-out double by Joe Rudi, an intentional walk to Reggie Jackson and a go-ahead single by Deron Johnson scoring Rudi. The A's added  insurance with an RBI single by Sal Bando and sac fly by Ray Fosse. Holtzman pitched a perfect bottom of the 9th to secure the G1 comeback. Now, the second game:

The Indians got a lead-off triple by Charlie Spikes and double by John Ellis for their 1st run off Vida Blue in the 2nd. They later took advantage of an error prone Joe Rudi, whose 2-base error scored Jack Brohamer for the Tribes 2nd run in the 6th. Charlie Spikes batting. Then in the 7th, Frank Duffy went solo off Blue for an seemingly unbeatable 3-0 lead.

Brent Strom pitched 4-hit ball into the 9th inning when the A's struck again. Bert Campaneris led off with a single, then pinch-hitter Rich McKinney doubled Campy to 3rd. Joe Rudi then crushed a 3-run homer off Strom, tying the score. Tom Hilgendorf reappeared and got the A's out 1-2-3 setting up the frantic bottom of the 9th.

Rusty Torres led off with an fly to right, then Vida Blue plunked Chris Chambliss. Error prone Joe Rudi struck again, bobbling a Buddy Bell fly ball, setting up 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. Frank Duffy was walked intentionally, Vida Blue was then lifted for Darold Knowles, who promptly let one fly wildly past Ray Fosse with Walt Williams batting, Chambliss scoring the winning run and earning a hard-earned split for the Tribe. Not much was known about what happened in the A's locker room after the game, except that Charlie O. wanted to see Joe Rudi and Vida Blue in his hotel room after the game...
