Senators start new era on winning note in 13, 5-4
WASHINGTON, Apr 10-(AP) President Kennedy's throwing of the 1st pitch signified a new era in Washington baseball. Willie Tasby's game-winning single in the 13th may have also started a winning era as the new-look Senators beat the Chicago White Sox in the National opener, 5-4.
Tasby's 4th hit of the game scored Dale Long with the winning run with 2 out, making a winner out of the 4th Washington pitcher of the game John Gabler and made a loser of Sox reliever Gerry Staley, the team's 6th pitcher.
The Sox forced extra innings in the 8th when Minnie Minoso reached on a 2-base error by Senator outfielder Marty Keough, Minoso then scored on a pinch-hit double by Sammy Esposito, forging a tie that stood until Washington's winning rally in the 13th.
The starting pitchers were Early Wynn for the White Sox and Dick Donovan for the Senators.
INJURY REPORT: Washington outfielder Gene Woodling left the game in the 9th in the 9th inning with a wrist injury. He will miss the next 4 games.
