4/22: Thriller at the River

 Cincinnati 6, Atlanta 5 (10) WP-Carroll LP-Schueler

Ron Reed had a 3-hit gem entering the bottom of the 8th for the Braves. He also drove in 4 of the 5 Braves runs with a pair of RBI singles. Then the Big Red Machine showed up, Pete Rose and Joe Morgan with back-to-back singles after Denis Menke had walked and was forced out, putting Phil Gagliano on.

Morgan's single scored PR Derrel Chaney, Rose to second. Bobby Tolan struck out for the 2nd out of the inning, then Johnny Bench reached on a error by Davey Johnson, loading the bases and forcing Reed from the game, bringing in RP Danny Frisella for the Braves. Frisella pitched to Tony Perez, who smacked a double to left scoring Rose and Morgan, while Bench was racing home from 1st trying to score the tying run. Ralph Garr threw him out. Braves 5, Reds 4, end of 8th.

After a scoreless top of the 9th, Frisella walked lead-off man Cesar Geronimo and with one out, did the same to PH Richie Scheinblum. After Derrel Chaney flied to center, Pete Rose singled home Geronimo on a fatigue result, tying the score at 5 and bringing in Ron Schueler to pitch to Joe Morgan, who bounced to 1st, forcing extra innings. After a 1/2/3 Braves 10th by Clay Carroll, Bobby Tolan and Johnny Bench both flied out. Tony Perez hit a fly ball too, only this one sent the Riverfront faithful happy and the Braves dejectedly heading for the team bus to the airport back to Atlanta. Final score, Reds 6, Braves 5 (10)
