4/21/67 AL: A's-Orioles
A's stun Champion Orioles 4-3
Baltimore, Apr 21-Break up the A's. The surprising A's, who have largely struggled throughout their Kansas City existence, pulled out their biggest triumph yet by beating the defending World Champion Baltimore Orioles by a score of 4-3. The win was their 4th in a row, sparking the A's to a glittering 6-2 record.
Charles, Roof spark power surge
With 2 outs in the Kansas City 2nd, Ed Charles sent a fly ball just over the center field fence by a few inches, giving the Athletics a 1-0 lead. Then in the 3rd, catcher Phil Roof joined in on the act with a solo homer of his own leading off the inning. After a 1-out single and stolen base by Bert Campaneris, Rick Monday smashed a line drive single, scoring Campy from 2nd and giving the A's a 3-0 lead off Oriole starter Tom Phoebus through 2-1/2 innings.
Catfish slugs, finishes strong after Oriole rally
In the top of the 6th, Ed Charles led off with a single, then stole second. Phoebus got Dick Green to ground to short and Phil Roof to fly to left. Up stepped Catfish Hunter, who smashed a single to center, scoring Charles on a very close play at home making the score 4-0. The A's needed that run, as in the bottom of the 6th, they staged a furious rally off Catfish, which started with a one-out double by Paul Blair. After a walk to Frank Robinson, Brooks Robinson nubbed one past Campaneris, loading the bases. Boog Powell then scored Blair and Big Frank with a 2-run single, Brooks to 3rd who then scored on a single by Curt Blefary. The luck of the Birds would then run out when Davey Johnson bounced into a force to 2nd, forcing out Powell, then Andy Etchebarren hit a harmless fly to Rick Monday ending the inning. Tom Phoebus led off the Oriole 7th with a single, but that would be all Catfish Hunter would give up from that point, as he retired the final 9 Birdies to secure the stunning win.
