4/21/67: Angels-Indians

Angels snap losing streak, scalp listless Tribe

Cleveland, April 21-The California Angels came into Cleveland and snapped a 4-game losing streak by scalping a listless Indians team behind the 5-hit pitching of Jack Sanford, 6-0. The loss extended the Tribe's own winless streak to 4 games, including 0-3 at Cleveland Stadium.

Reichardt starts out with a bang

Paul Schaal got things started with a lead-off walk and steal of 2nd, then after a Sam McDowell strikeout of Jim Fregosi and single by Jay Johnstone which moved Schall to 3rd, Rick Reichardt slammed a 3-run homer off McDowell. The Halos would add 3 more off McDowell in the 5th on a lead-off double by Fregosi, a walk by Reichardt and a 2-run triple by Jose Cardenal, who then scored on an error by McDowell off of Don Mincher's bat. McDowell would be lifted for a pinch-hitter in the 5th, ending a disastrous outing which did include 9 strikeouts.

Sanford in cruise control

While McDowell was being battered, Angel starter Jack Sanford was very dominant, going the distance with 4 strikeouts, just 1 walk and a hit batter, at one point retiring 11 little Indians in a row.

NOTES: Prior to the game, Indians 3rd baseman Max Alvis was awarded a coupon to a local ice cream parlor in honor of his turning a triple play against the Athletics. Counting McDowell's 9 strikeouts, the Indians struck out 14 Angel batters, including 4 from reliever Steve Bailey and one more from Bob Allen. Bob Rodgers received the brunt of the Indian K's, recording the "golden sombrero."
