4/21/67: Phillies-Mets
The name is Bu-chek
Flushing, New York, Apr 21-Usually, Mets fans let loose a few "boos." On this Friday afternoon, they were letting loose a few "Bu's" in honor of second sacker Jerry Buchek, who slugged a pinch-hit 2-run homer in the 8th to give the Metroplitans a 2-1 lead against the visiting Phils. After the Phils' Johnny Callison hit a solo homer in the 9th off Jack Fisher to tie the game with 1 out, Buchek struck again with his second 2-run homer of the game in the bottom of the 10th to give the Mets a rousing 4-2 win over the Fighting Phils.
Bunning, Fisher duel away
Jim Bunning and Jack Fisher dueled for 3 perfect innings before the Phils struck in the 4th on back-to-back one-out doubles by Johnny Briggs and Richie Allen. It would stay 1-zip until the bottom of the 8th when Bud Harrelson drew a lead-off walk and after a failed bunt attempt by Fisher, stole second. Cleon Jones, pinch-hitting for Chuck Hiller, then slow-rolled Harrelson to 3rd. Then came Buchek, pinch-hitting for Don Bosch, sending a Bunning fastball to left field past the leap of Johnny Briggs, giving the Mets a 2-1 lead.
Callison ties, then...
After Richie Allen led off the 9th with a bouncer to short, Johnny Callison broke the hearts of Met fans with a booming drive to right that never had a chance to land in Al Luplow's glove. It was 2-2 after 9 innings. Jack Fisher retired the Phils including Bunning in order in the top of the 10th. In the bottom half, Harrelson struck again, this time with a lead-off single to center. Fisher was more successful with his bunt attempt to 3rd this time, forcing Gene Mauch to bring in left-handed Grant Jackson, who struck out Cleon Jones. Then came Buchek and another drive to left. Johnny Briggs tried, but a split-second later, raucous Met fans were chanting "Bu-Chek, Bu-Chek!" The win extended the Mets' win streak to 2 and extended the Phils loss streak to 2.
One and done
With his return timeline still a ways away and SS Dick Groat out due to injury, Gene Mauch decided to insert 1st baseman Bill White in the lead-off position for one at-bat. He struck out.
