4/21/67: Tigers-Twins

Northrup, Tigers double up on Twins

Detroit, April 21-Jim Northrup singled home runs in the 4th and 8th while Larry Sherry struck out the side in the 9th to preserve a 4-2 Tigers victory over the Twins in front of a roaring Tiger stadium crowd.

It started with a triple

After starter Denny McLain got the Twins 1-2-3 in the 1st, Dick McAuliffe led off with a triple off Twin starter Dave Boswell. Don Wert promptly cashed that one in with a sac fly, giving the Bengals a lead they would not relinquish. With 1 out in the home 4th, Al Kaline reached 2nd on an error by Twin RF Tony Oliva. Northrup cashed that one in with an RBI single extending the Tiger margin to 2-0. In the home 6th, Kaline's 1-out double led to another Tiger run, this time driven in by Norm Cash, a 2-out single making the score 3-0 after 6.

McLain in command, then Twins stage rally

Denny McLain was in total command through 6, limiting the high-powered Twins to just one hit. Tony Oliva led off the 7th with a single but was promptly doubled off by Harmon Killebrew's DP ball to Ray Oyler at short. Bob Allison then singled with 2 out, but Zoilo Versalles found the glove of Oyler, ending that would-be rally. After Russ Nixon struck out to lead off the 8th, Rod Carew singled, then promptly scored on a pinch-hit triple by Ted Uhlaender, prompting Mayo Smith to take out McLain and bring in reliever Larry Sherry to put out the rally. Sherry got Cesar Tovar to line out to Don Wert at 3rd, but Rich Rollins would take advantage of an rare miscue by Al Kaline, dropping a routine fly to score Uhlaender from 3rd, cutting the Tiger lead to 3-2. Oliva grounded to Oyler to end the threat.

Northrup, Sherry finish the job

Lenny Green led off the Tiger 8th with a walk, then moved to 2nd on Kaline's 2nd hit of the game. Northrup then cashed in the insurance policy with an RBI single to center. In the Twin 9th, Killebrew struck out, then Allison ripped a single. Sherry settled down and got Versalles looking and struck out PH Rich Reese swinging, securing the win for Denny McLain, who ran his record to 2-0.
