4/21/67: White Sox-Senators

Sox Go-Go-Go Past Senators, extend win streak to 7

Washington, April 21-The American League-leading Chicago White Sox ran and hit their way to an early lead and hung on to an 4-2 win over the Washington Senators, who have lost 5 straight after winning their first 2. The game was the first start for Sox Lefty Gary Peters after pitching a 1-hitter against the Senators at Comiskey Park. Peters scattered 5 hits this time around, getting the win against Senator starter Joe Coleman.

Putting the pedal to the medal early

After Don Buford led off with a grounder to 2nd, the Sox got into gear with a sharp single to center by Ken Berry, who then stole second and went all the way home on a single to right by Tommy McCraw. McCraw then stole 2nd and was stranded there as the inning ended. In the Sox second, after Jerry Adair fouled to catcher, Duane Josephson singled to left, advanced to 2nd on a Ron Hansen slow roller to 1st and scored when batterymate Peters rapped the first of 2 doubles extending the Sox lead to 2-0. Don Buford singled home Peters to extend the lead to 3-0.

Peters faces familiar foe

In the bottom of the 2nd, after Cap Peterson flied to right, Ken Harrelson, who broke up Peters' no-hit bid with a double in the 8th inning, did it again, this time taking Peters to left field where Pete Ward watched it fly in the seats for Harrelson's first home run of the season. The Sox would get that run back with their GO-GO gusto in the 3rd, getting a 1-out walk from Pete Ward, a single by Jerry Adair moving Ward to 3rd and Duane Josephson bouncing a fielder's choice to 3rd scoring Ward and extending the Sox lead to 4-1.

NOTES: Washington would get to within 2 on a pair of doubles by Fred Valentine and Cap Peterson in the 6th, but Peters closed it out with three scoreless innings, striking out 7, walking 1 for his 2nd victory of the season. The Sox collected 13 hits, three from Tommy McCraw and 2 from Ken Berry, Jerry Adair, Duane Josephson and Peters. McCraw also swiped 2 bases. The Sox have won 7 straight.
