4/21/67: Yankees-Red Sox
Stottlemyre, Smith scuttle Sox, 7-0
Boston, April 21-Mel Stottlemyre fired a 5-hitter while Charley Smith slugged a go-ahead 2-run homer as the struggling Yankees busted out against their dreaded rivals from Boston, 7-0 in front of stunned spectators at Fenway Park. The win snapped a 3-game losing streak, while the Red Sox had theirs extended to 2 games.
Great start for Bennett, but Smith & co. takes over
Red Sox left-hander Dennis Bennett started very impressively, retiring the first 12 Yankees, then in the 5th, Elston Howard drew a lead-off walk. Charley Smith would then add to Bennett's new-found misery with an impressive 2-run homer into the "Monster."
Yankees bat around in 6th
Stottlemyre began the decisive 6th with a lead-off single off Bennett, then after Tom Tresh was caught looking at the "Monster," Bill Robinson doubled Stottlemyre to 3rd. In desperation, Dick Williams walked Mickey Mantle to pitch to Elston Howard, who singled home Stottlemyre to make the score 3-0. Charley Smith didn't have another homer in him, but he did force Bennett into a bases-loaded ball 4 for the 4th Yankees run. A Joe Pepitone sac fly later, it was all for Bennett, who was then replaced by Dan Osinski, who then gave up a Horace Clarke single, scoring with the 6th Yankee run of the game, 4th of the inning which ended on a John Kennedy bouncer to 3rd.
NOTES: The Yankees added a 7th run in the when Elston Howard wheezed his way to 3rd on a triple, scoring when Charley Smith's grounder to Tony Horton got under his legs at 1st. Howard was 2-3 with an RBI and 3 runs scored. Stottlemyre had 2 threats against him in the game, a 2nd/3rd threat in the 4th and a 1st and 3rd in the 8th. Neither threat yielded any runs as Stottlemyre went the distance, striking out 5, walking 3.
