1973: LCS through 2 games
First of all, let me open by saying I was not expecting 28 views on the introductory post: Which obviously means you want to find out what's going on so far. OK, here it is:
ALCS: Angel Mangual figured very prominently in the first 2 games for Oakland. His 2-run homer in the 9th inning of game 1 off Jim Palmer gave the A's a hard-earned 2-1 victory. In game 2, he figured in the worst kind of prominence when his 2-base error in the bottom of the 4th highlighted a 4-run/10-batter 4th inning for the Orioles in a 5-4 win, evening the series at 1 game apiece. Vida Blue, with relief help by Rollie Fingers got the G1 win, while Dave McNally withstood a late A's rally to earn the G2 win over Catfish Hunter. Reggie Jackson leads all LCS hitters with 6 hits through 2 games, all singles, while the Birdmen of Baltimore are just happy to be all squared despite a 9 for 56 batting showing in the 1st 2 games.
NLCS: Through 2 games of the real NLCS, it was a 1-all tie: This NLCS so far is all Big Red Machine, all the time. Game 1 was a classic Tom Seaver-Jack Billingham duel which went to the wire and was won by the bat of Cesar Geronimo, whose lead-off 7th inning homer against Seaver gave the Reds a hard-earned 2-1 series-opening win. In game 2, the "Machine" ran even more smoothly than in game 1, when the Reds collected 10 hits off John Matlack and Phil Hennigan, including a 3-run homer by noted spray paint user Johnny Bench in the bottom of the 1st en route to a dripless 6-0 win over the overmatched Mets. Don Gullett scattered 2 hits, carrying a perfect game into the 6th, which was broken up by Don Hahn's lead-off single.
